Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a new type of high-performance thermoplastic resin, featuring high mechanical strength, high-temperature resistance, chemical resistance, flame retardancy, good thermal stability and excellent electrical properties. It is widely applied in the fields of electronics, automobiles, machinery and chemical engineering. Polyphenylene sulfide, whose full name is polyphenyl sulfide, is a thermoplastic resin with phenyl sulfide groups in its main chain. Polyphenylene sulfide is a crystalline polymer. Unstretched fibers have a large amorphous zone (with a crystallinity of approximately 5%), and they crystallize and release heat at 125℃, with a glass transition temperature of 150℃. Melting point 281℃.

Advantages:

1. Excellent high-temperature resistance:

High-temperature stability: The long-term service temperature can reach 200 to 220℃, and the short-term temperature can exceed 260℃. The heat distortion temperature (HDT) exceeds 260℃ (about 110℃ for the unreinforced model, significantly improved after reinforcement).

Flame retardancy: The UL94 flame retardant grade reaches V-0 (no flame retardants need to be added), and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) is ≥47%, making it a difficult-to-burn material.


2. Excellent chemical stability:

Corrosion resistance: It has extremely strong resistance to most organic solvents (such as alcohols, ketones, hydrocarbons), inorganic acids, alkalis, salts, etc., second only to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Hydrolytic stability: It can maintain performance in high-temperature and high-pressure steam or damp heat environments, making it suitable for the chemical and energy industries.


3. Excellent mechanical properties:

High rigidity: After reinforcement with glass fiber (GF), the tensile strength and flexural modulus are significantly enhanced (for example, the tensile strength of the 40% GF reinforced model can reach 150-200 MPa).

Creep resistance: Small deformation under long-term load, suitable for precision structural components.


4. Excellent dimensional stability:

Low hygroscopicity: The water absorption rate is only 0.02 to 0.05%, and the impact of humidity changes on dimensions is minimal.

Low coefficient of thermal expansion: Close to that of metals, suitable for use with metal inserts.


5. Electrical performance:

High-frequency insulation: Stable dielectric constant, good arc resistance, suitable for high-temperature electronic components (such as sockets, coil bobbings).

Arc resistance: The arc resistance time can reach over 100 seconds (UL746A).


6. Processing performance:

Easy injection molding & extrusion: Melting point approximately 280℃, good fluidity, suitable for processing thin-walled or complex parts.

Solderability: Can withstand reflow soldering temperatures (such as in SMT processes).


7. Other features:

Wear resistance: Low coefficient of friction, suitable for moving parts such as bearings and gears.

Radiation resistance: Resistant to gamma rays and X-rays, used in the nuclear industry or medical equipment.


Application:

1.Automotive turbocharger components:

Modified PPS is used to manufacture the intake pipes of turbochargers and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves. Its high-temperature resistance (above 220°C) and lightweight properties can replace metals. The 40% glass fiber reinforced (GF40) modification provides high strength and meets the demanding requirements of engine operation


2. Household appliance heat-resistant structural components: 

The pressure valve of the rice cooker and the hot air duct of the air fryer use mineral-filled PPS to ensure dimensional stability and food safety at high temperatures. Flame-retardant modification (UL94 V0) makes it suitable for fire-resistant components such as the electromagnetic cooker coil bracket.


3. Chemical corrosion-resistant pumps and valves: 

The acid-resistant pump housings and valve sealing rings made of modified PPS can resist strong acid and alkali corrosion and have a longer lifespan than stainless steel. The carbon fiber reinforced (CF) model is used for electroplating fixtures and combines lightweight and resistance to electrolyte corrosion properties.


4. Lithium battery insulation components: 

The battery module brackets of new energy vehicles and the insulation shells of charging piles use flame-retardant PPS (V0 grade) to prevent high-temperature short circuits and fires. The glass fiber reinforced model provides high rigidity and ensures the structural stability of the battery pack.
